Smithfield Emergency Management and Smithfield Public Schools work together to assess the threat from a variety of sources.  The risks associated with EEE has most recently been of concern.  This news story provides an update to the actions taken to reduce the threat of the EEE virus.

Aerial spraying in the 4 high risk zones in RI that were identified by state officials was recently completed. One of these areas touches the southeast corner of Smithfield. Locally, in coordination with the Recreation Department, Smithfield Youth Soccer Association is arranging to hire a licensed vendor to spray Deerfield Park for mosquitoes. Public Works has also treated storm drains at Deerfield Park as well as at our schools. Lastly, the Homecoming Bonfire at the High School has been cancelled due to EEE and other games and practices have been moved to daylight hours.  Dusk is a particularly active time for mosquitos.

The RIDOH reported that Rhode Island’s only EEE victim passed away over the weekend. The RIDOH urges the continued use of personal protective measures, such as bug spray and long pants/shirts.
